Congratulations to AUS HEARTS Lead Investigator Dr Niamh Chapman who was awarded the 2025 NSW Ministerial Award for Rising Star in Cardiovascular Research last night. Niamh was recognised for her achievements in hypertension research, which aims to improve the way health services are delivered to better meet the needs of patients and healthcare providers.

In her acceptance speech, Niamh acknowledged the many people who had helped her along the journey.

“Thank you to the teachers, supervisors, mentors and sponsors that have supported me along the way, particularly Professor Barry McDonnell. As someone that was a bit of a ratbag in high school, I wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance.

I’d like to thank all the people that supported my move from Tasmania to Sydney, particularly Steven Wise, Julie Redfern AM, Gemma Figtree, Kerry Doyle PSM OAM Carissa Bonner and my nominator Alta Schutte. I’d also like to thank the many people that have welcomed me into the research community here since moving.

I’d like to thank the collaborators, consumers, partners and funders of my research. It is a joy to learn from and work with you.

HUGE thank you to my team - this award would not be possible without their mammoth efforts. They are the powerhouse and foundation of our program and it is a privilege and a joy to work with such wonderful people on a daily basis.”
